I just read this article and have been thinking about it.
In the past, in our nation's history, before there were telephones, internet or emails, didn't presidents used to still write the people they knew, and even people they did not know so well (like heads of state from other countries)? Aren't the annals of history filled with thick journals and long letters of correspondence, which not only discuss political but personal and global matters?
I realize that email is insecure (but so are those long ago hand written letters, to be sure),but it is the world's fastest and most widely used form of communication and I am not sure if being isolated from it is the way to go.
The article says that Dubbya chose to isolate himself from the instant correspondence of email rather than subject whatever wrote to the people who would use those words against him, to embarrass him. But he did an even better job of embarrassing himself (and the US right along with him) by saying things that mad him look even more of a fool than anything he could written in an email... and further by doing things that showed a distinctive separation from the reality the rest of us face every day. Hurricane Katrina, anyone?
Could it be that when Bush isolated himself from email he also isolated himself from his people? That perhaps a few emails back and forth from people who might actually say 'George, what were you thinking? Go back and fix that!' candidly to him in an email might have humanized him more to the world rather than demonized him?
I'm not a Bush supporter and I'm ore than glad he'll be gone soon, but I am beginning to wonder.
I hope Barack does not choose total isolation, because his strengths lie in his ability to understand and reach the people, and walk among them, not above them.
Democracy means government by discussion, but it is only effective if you can stop people talking.

I find myself quite anxious for tomorrow to be here, even though I have already cast my ballot. Today feels like the deep breath before a storm and I am ready for the end, so we can see where the storm washed away the debris or wreaked havoc and destruction.
And totally randomly and not related... had dream about Matt & Mohinder the other night... it involved exercise equipment and lots of bare skin. And to think I have not watched Heroes in about 2 weeks.
Well, my absentee ballot arrived today and I have voted, sealed it, addressed it, stamped it, and will personally drive it to the mailbox tomorrow right after I take my daughter to school.
If you have to ask who I voted for, you haven’t been paying attention. ;-)
Seriously, though, this is my ‘first election.’ I have never voted before, and maybe I should be ashamed to say that, but I am more proud to say that I have done so now, for this election, when so much seems to be at stake. The United States is at a crossroads of great importance and the next president will be the one to lead us through this intersection. Where we go from here, as a nation, depends on whom elect.
So yes, I am very proud and excited to say that I have voted.
Talked to my husband on the phone today (he's deployed Over There, for those wondering) and he made the comment about the election that "it's no contest, 'your boy' is going to win."
By 'my boy' he means Obama, of course. (Making a note that 'my boy' or 'your boy' is how Steve and I refer to people we support or don't support, or actors we like or whatever. It's not in any way a racial commentary on Obama. He's just… my boy… because I like him and support him and that's how Steve and I talk, without naming names.)
I told him that it's too soon say that for sure because anything can happen between now and election day.
We went on to discuss what could happen, fears I have of what could happen.
Such as… someone assassinating Obama before we get a chance to vote for him. (This is a huge one because of all the hate mongering lately, but I've been fearing it since the primaries when Hillary wouldn't shut up about either of the Kennedy assassinations and it felt too much like she was drawing a parallel in peoples minds between Obama and those horrible acts.)
Or the specter of the Great Depression, during which time FDR was allowed an unprecedented 3rd term as president. I fear the economy collapsing in the next month to the point where someone in Washington will try to give Bush a third term… and succeed.
We need four more years of him like we need a hole in the head or another World War.
These are just my fears, but I'm sure other people out there must share them. While I hope with all my heart that Steve's right and 'my boy' will be the next president, I live with held breathe until the polls are closed.
Joe the Plumber not even registered to vote.
Guess neither one of them is getting his vote, and they worked so hard to impress him last night!

I got these off Yahoo News. The full gallery is here. It's a fashion show, but some of the "fashion" is questionable to my palette. However, these two are delightful.
I was feeling pretty blue last night but I do feel better this morning.
For one thing, my candidate is awesome, isn't he?
Secondly, my bathroom scale is also awesome. This morning it told me that I've lost 10 pounds since February. Which leaves me with 25 more to go to make my 'little goal.' Go me!
And I meant that with all sincerity. I adored her husband as a president, but I never did like her. After this, I'd rather have McCain than her.
